What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system and addresses the effects of these disorders on the patient’s overall health. This hands-on approach to health care begins with patient examination and extends through diagnosis and treatment. Through their extensive medical training, chiropractors are equipped with broad diagnostic skills and the expertise to recommend not only therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, but also nutritional and lifestyle modifications.
Treatment
Among the therapeutic procedures performed by chiropractors is spinal manipulation, or chiropractic adjustment, in which the doctor exerts a controlled force into joints that have lost movement or range of motion due to tissue injury. Such damage may occur as a result of an accident or injury, or even as a consequence of repetitive stress like that resulting from extended periods of work in an awkward position or with poor posture. Professional adjustment of the stressed joint and tissues can help patients by restoring their mobility, reducing pain, and eliminating tightness in the muscles.
Chiropractic sessions can serve as a solution in themselves or act as a complement to medical treatments. Chiropractic doctors use clinical evaluation, sometimes with the assistance of other diagnostic tools, to determine of chiropractic is the correct course of action for a particular patient. When the patient’s condition falls outside the chiropractor’s scope of practice, the doctor will refer the patient to another health care provider.
Can it help me?
Because of its focus on the entire musculoskeletal system and nervous system, chiropractic care is a suitable treatment for many different types of health issues and injuries. Among the primary conditions warranting a visit to the chiropractor are injuries due to sports or accident, headaches, back and neck pain, sciatica and disc problems. While any accident or serious injury should receive the attention of the patient’s regular physician, chiropractic care can be essential to reducing the trauma associated with these incidents and aiding the patient’s body in healing quickly and healthfully.
